Kyoto: Iwatayama Monkey Park & Bamboo Forest

At this park, the humans are in the cage.  Buy yourself some overpriced peanuts at the park counter and have a blast feeding these beautiful creatures.  Or, bring your own snacks, like we did, and get a severe telling off.  That lady at the counter has her EYE on YOU.

In hindsight, we didn’t realise giving the monkeys our own brought snacks might not be healthy for them. Sorry.

Opening times
Daily from 9am to 4.30pm

How to get here
The park is easily accessible by train. A 5 minute walk from Hankyu Arashiyama Station or a 15 minus walk from JR Saga-Arashiyama Station.

When you arrive
There is a whole lot of stairs to climb before you reach the park at the top.
Be prepared to spend about 1 – 2 hours here (feeding monkeys never gets old).

On the way back
From the monkey park we walked through a stunning bamboo forest. It felt like another world entirely. Truly spectacular.
