Celebrated annually from 3rd – 7th August in Akita City, Akita Prefecture. The night parade goes between 19.25pm to 9pm.
The festival also has daytime events which are mainly held at Agora Plaza in front of the Seibu Department Store which are held from 10:00 to 17:00 on all days of the festival.
The Night Parade is held nightly along Chuo Dori Street in the center of the city.
Almost 250 kanto poles fill up the street.
The parade lasts about 90 minutes.
There are plenty of free places to sit on the sidewalk along the route.
Reserved seats are on the median strip and cost up to 2600 yen. Reservations can be made a few months in advance or even on the day. We were lucky and quickly went into the median to take some great shots which you can see in the video below.
How to get here
The night parade is held along Chuo Dori Street which is a 15 minute walk west of Akita Station.
Daytime events are held at the Agora Plaza in front of Seibu Department Store, 5 minute walk from the station.
Kanto Competitions take place next to the Akita Museum of Art, 10 minute walk from the station.
Kanto Museum is only a couple of streets away from Chuo Dori Street, which is about 15 minute walk from the station.
This is something we will never forget. And not because one of us nearly lost an eye or that the festival chief chased and boarded our bus to personally give us apology umbrellas…
